<p>Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG) may be best know for producing high-quality web-original video content like Kiefer Sutherland&#8217;s <em>The Confession</em> or Seth Green&#8217;s <em>ControlTV</em>. Now the online video production company is getting into the distribution game, opening up its platform to allow third parties to syndicate and monetize their premium online videos.</p>
<p><img src="http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/clip-screenshot-1.jpg?w=316&#038;h=604" alt="" title="CLiP Screenshot 1" width="316" height="604"  class="alignleft size-full wp-image-388299" />With the launch of DBG&#8217;s new Content Library Platform, (CLiP) the startup hopes to create editorially curated verticals of premium content, which publishing partners can embed on their own web pages. DBG will then sell video advertising against that inventory and share revenues with publishers and video producers that are part of the network.</p>
<p>The whole thing is powered by infrastructure that DBG has built out for distribution of its own videos, which the company is now extending out to third-party publishers. It includes a proprietary video player and handles all the content management, hosting, ad serving and reporting for those partners.</p>
<p>For DBG publishing partners, the CLiP platform is designed to expand the library of content that is available for playback on their own websites. In short, it is meant to grow the available ad inventory not just for DBG, but for participating publishers. For large video publishers, that could mean incremental video ad revenue. For mid-tier and long-tail publishers, the platform could add a whole new line of video ad revenue.</p>
<p>In that respect, CLiP is kind of like AOL&#8217;s 5min video distribution platform, which aggregates video content from thousands of video creators and automatically provides relevant video inventory on publisher pages through contextual analysis.</p>
<p>There are a few important differences, though, according to DBG CEO Chris Young. For one thing, DBG&#8217;s CliP is focused on <em>premium</em> online video content, and is very specifically trying to differentiate itself from some of the semi-professional how-to content that is part of the 5min network. More importantly, unlike 5min, which uses contextual analysis to determine which videos to serve up on publisher pages, DBG has an editorial team whose job it is to curate its vertical channels of content.</p>
<p>The system will launch with six channels, including Entertainment, Business and Technology, Woman’s Lifestyle, Men’s Lifestyle and Travel. Future channels of content will include Health, Sports, Food and Premium Entertainment. A select group of beta partners have been working with DBG on the platform since last December. Together, those publishers are on pace to attract 30 million monthly uniques, but the footprint should expand significantly when the system goes live later this year. According to Young, the video library includes more than 22,000 video clips and at launch. CLiP will be syndicating out to 22 content partners, which together have more than 70 distinct websites.</p>
<p>For premium web-original publishers, platforms like DBG&#8217;s CliP offer new ways to increase views, especially in light of the emergence of more broadcast and cable content coming online. With services like Hulu and Netflix gaining popularity, those publishers need a way to get their content noticed, at the same time they seek to differentiate from other semi-professional web original content.</p>

It has also eclipsed 400,000 premium members, putting the company well on its way toward its goal of 1 million paid users.</p>
<p>Evernote hit 5 million users on Nov. 10 last year and was up to 6 million users by the first of the year. It&#8217;s since grown by 67 percent in a little over five months to 10 million users with the last million signing up in 32 days. It had 3.6 million unique visitors in the last 30 days, up 70 percent since the beginning of the year. And perhaps most impressive is Evernote&#8217;s paid conversion growth. Premium users have more than doubled from 201,308 on Jan. 1 to 424,736 now, a 111-percent jump.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ten million users seemed like an inconceivable number when we were getting ready to launch the service into open beta less than three years ago. Well, it wasn’t literally inconceivable; we actually put it on business plans and investor pitch decks and everything. Yup. 10,000,000 users in three years. That what we told people. We had really pretty graphs showing the projections. Reality is much more impressive than projections,&#8221; wrote CEO Phil Libin in a blog post.</p>

<p>The latest news caps off a wave of activity this year by Evernote, which has been working to improve its products across different platforms. In March, it launched Evernote 4, a new version of the app on the iPhone with better tools for accessing and organizing notes. It followed up later that month with a more robust web-based app that showed how Evernote was making the web a priority. More recently, Evernote provided new updates for Android, Windows and Mac with better sharing, editing and security features. Evernote said three quarters of its members access the service from two or more platforms.</p>
<p>The company is showing it&#8217;s not sitting still after taking in $  20 million in Series C funding in October. At the time, the company said it still had $  9 million of the $  11 million it previously raised, but was taking on more funding to help it achieve its goal of hitting 1 million paying customers. Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, said last year that Evernote was converting about 2 percent of its customers to its paid service. By January, it was up to 3.3 percent and now, it&#8217;s up to 4.2 percent.</p>

But with sign-ups accelerating, it might not be that far off. We&#8217;ve been fans of the service for some time because of its simple way of helping you wade through notes and memories. And it has been a great example of how a freemium service can thrive with the right balance between paid and free services. Things are getting more interesting now that Apple just included a reminder service in iOS 5 for note taking and shopping lists. But with Evernote&#8217;s fast growth, it&#8217;ll take more than that to derail its momentum.</p>

<p>Posterous, the email-based blogging platform, emphasizes simplicity and ease of use, yet it keeps adding new features. Unlike, say, Twitter, the company isn&#8217;t so dogmatic about simplicity that it forgoes functionality such like media hosting and mobile clients. Of course, there are other differences between Posterous and Twitter; Posterous hasn&#8217;t experienced the same meteoric growth in usage and hasn&#8217;t fostered a developer community to fill in all its gaps.</p>
<p><img src="http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/groupposterous.png?w=300&#038;h=200" alt="" title="GroupPosterous" width="300" height="200"  class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-168204" />In reality, said Posterous CEO Sachin Agarwal in an interview today, &#8220;We are on the WordPress* end of the spectrum, but people think we&#8217;re micro-blogging because we&#8217;re so simple.&#8221; As Posterous grows and becomes more full-featured, Agarwal and co-founder Garry Tan say they will never lose email posting as a core function, and will always try to build experiences that mimic and integrate with familiar interfaces. But the company has some new features in the works: increased support for groups, premium accounts for businesses, proximity-based geoblogs, and a better bookmarklet to bring in outside content.</p>
<p><strong>Groups</strong>: Posterous is increasingly used as a group communication tool, where users send messages to Posterous like they would a group email list or a Yahoo Group. Other group members can sign up to receive all posts by email, so the blog itself is essentially a public or private archive. The difference is, the blog format is a good way to consume and search, and Posterous is much better than email at handling media. And as compared to the new Facebook Groups, anyone can participate without even creating a Posterous account. </p>
<p>For example, the TED Conference&#8217;s Fellows program has 150-200 people communicating with each other through a Posterous group, Agarwal said. Today 15 percent of Posterous sites are multi-contributor, but the company thinks that number will rise as it adds new tools like automatic group creation when you cc Posterous on an email to multiple recipients.</p>
<p><strong>Premium Accounts:</strong> To date, Posterous hasn&#8217;t made any money, but it plans to start pulling its weight. In the next few weeks it will be beta-testing Google AdSense revenue share with some of its celebrity users (it won&#8217;t name names, but folks like Ashton Kutcher use Posterous to host their photos uploaded through Twitter clients). Early next year, Posterous plans to roll out subscription accounts for small and medium business owners who want to use the service to manage their social media presences. Agarwal said many real estate agents already use the service today to syndicate content to their Twitter, Facebook and other online presences. This use case sounds kind of similar to tools like HootSuite.</p>
<p><strong>Geoblogs</strong>: At the Blog World Expo this past week, Posterous set up a group blog. Anyone who loaded up the Posterous iPhone app in the vicinity of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center was invited to contribute to a Posterous blog dedicated to the show. The company expects to use these pop-up proximity blogs around additional events and for other purposes.</p>
<p><strong>A Better Bookmarklet</strong>: This sounds a bit dangerous as far as plagiarism goes, but Posterous will be updating its bookmarklet tool so users can grab articles and videos by just selecting them and clicking. The idea is to make it even easier to add new content. Today, 50 percent of Posterous posts contain media other than text, and that portion is rising. </p>
<p>Posterous has just 4.4 million monthly visitors, according to Quantcast, compared to 30.9 million for rival Tumblr. It&#8217;s possible that&#8217;s an undercount of actual usage due to users who interact with the service over email, but unfortunately Posterous doesn&#8217;t provide user or site numbers to make a more appropriate comparison. The company, which has 10 employees, has raised about $ 5 million in funding.</p>
<p><em>Automattic, maker of WordPress.com, is backed by True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is an investor in the parent company of this blog, Giga Omni Media. Om Malik, founder of Giga Omni Media, is also a venture partner at True.</em></p>
